  •     I'm Optimistic?

    I have to admit, I’m feeling pretty good about 2013. Given the economic train wreck in recent years, it’s unfamiliar territory for me. Optimism is in the air. I’ve talked with dozens of retailers at the industry shows in New Orleans and Atlantic City, seen the Dow break 14,000 and record the best January since 1989. Even housing is coming back. In Phoenix, where I live, we have seen a 27 percent spike in home values in the last 12 months. Things are getting better — albeit not at the pace I would like, but progress nonetheless. That’s not to say it will all be smooth sailing this year. Our industry and nation still face daunting challenges including the fiscal cliff, deficit reduction, congressional bickering and continued lack of credit available to business owners. But after the last five years, I’m beginning see the results of the hard work of dealers grinding it out. Retailers who survived the recession should take great pride in their tenacity in this economic storm. I have heard from countless retailers who are downright giddy at their prospects to boost profitability this year and in 2014. Most have gained significant footholds in their communities and driven competitors out of business. In this issue, we feature one such retailer: Georgia Hot Tub Co. has continued to position itself as one of the premier hot tub retailers in the southeast by opening a third location in Kennesaw, north of Atlanta (pg. 44). We also continue our mission to educate our readers about leveraging financials (pg. 22) and pursuing a legal checkup (pg. 49) to make sure your hard work is not jeopardized.

    Industry research suggests there are more than 17 million families who have the cash and temperament to purchase a hot tub. Just imagine how good things could get with just a few months of sustainable consumer optimism. A guy can dream.
