Getting Down to Business

Unless you live in a cave or don’t open your mail, you know that the Int’l Pool | Spa | Patio Expo is quickly approaching – November 13-18 in Las Vegas.

Few would disagree that this annual show is important and offers a unique opportunity to see new products, visit existing vendors, listen to informative workshops, take a few classes and even rekindle old friendships.

If you listen to the usual pre-show hoopla, you would believe that the show is bigger than ever…more educational seminars, more speakers and even more exhibitors. But make no mistake; given the economic downturn and state of the spa industry, something will be missing at this year’s IPSPE. Despite the hype by organizers, there’s no doubt that many large booths, the usual celebratory fanfare and open bar cocktail parties are a distant memory.

I also expect the show to be much different for me personally. In past years I’ve enjoyed a few hundred cups of coffee throughout the week at a concession shanty with key industry players, vendors and store retailers. Regretfully, a significant number of those individuals and companies are no longer in business or have taken an indefinite hiatus from industry life in 2009. Some individuals have been ‘downsized’ out of the spa industry, while others have been sidelined from attending the show due to corporate finances.

This ‘brain trust’ attrition is tragic because this show might be one of the most important trade shows in recent memory to help provide clarity, solidarity and reward businesses that continue to invest in our industry’s future.

We’d like to think that SpaRetailer is one of those companies. After three years of planning, we will debut our new retail store certification program, Certified™ Retail Store and Certified™ Pool Builder. You can learn all about this new, independent recognition program at our booth #421.

In 2010 we will recognize a select number of hot tub and swimming pool retailers that consistently provide a superior buying experience for consumers. Purchasing a hot tub, swim spa or swimming pool from a Certified™ company means the homeowner has selected one of the BEST hot tub or pool retailers in North America based on audited results related to sales, service, operations and customer satisfaction.

The application process is simple and fair and will likely have a positive impact on your business. Now when a customer asks, “Why should I buy from you,” you can tell them with conviction you ARE the best local retailer based on a third party evaluating all aspects of your business. In many markets, your retail store will probably be the only Certified™ Retail Store in your community. Imagine the sales advantage this unbiased endorsement will have when competing head-to-head in large venues such as home shows, fairs and similar off-site events.

So, when you have a minute, stop by our booth (#421). I’d love to meet you, hear what’s on your mind and learn firsthand what is (and isn’t) working in the field. I’d even like to buy you a cup of coffee.

Best,
